One thing I need to work on is writing posts in a timely fashion, and I think after what has been a crazy past five weeks, I’m in a position to get back in a groove. Because I wrote “Part I” of this article hours before my birthday on the West Coast, I have to write Part II… even if it is about a 1.5 weeks late, I didn’t take an actual time log as planned, and I have no pictures to show for it (again)…
12-6am: I actually went to sleep. I had a feeling that I would possibly be out all night (even though I had no idea who I would be with or where I would be at). Either way, I woke up in a good state of mind.
6am-4pm: It’s the middle of City Year ATA/ATR week, so I made it to the Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools to share my birthday energy with all of City Year Los Angeles.
4pm-6pm: This is where the day got interesting. By this time, the luster of it being my birthday was pretty much off (that, and the fact that I had no real plans was becoming evident). I had just took forever to finish CPR training for the third time in the last five years (I showed how well I was paying attention this time by ripping out the artificial lungs “checking for debris”), and my teammates wanted me to hurry up for a team meeting. As soon as I got through the doorway, Chelsea (one of my favorite Texans) caught me in the eye with party string! Surprise birthday parties are awesome: I got a cake, peanut butter cookies, and a card from the whole team (and I’m almost certain somebody taped me getting lit up by glow-in-the dark party string). Camie (my tag team partner this year) put the whole thing together as a birthday buddy; it was pretty damn sweet.
From there, it was time to break down RFK, and I was pushed to make some birthday plans. I’m not to good at making plans that involve other folks (One of my five[?] new year’s resolutions), but I make up for substandard planning with extreme flexibility. Camie suggested I go bowling, and people would have been down, but I decided to postpone anything big as Willie and I hit the road for Boyle Heights.
6pm-8pm: On the way home, Willie and I started tossing around some ideas for the night. I’m the type that would just go around telling strangers that it’s my birthday, but I wanted to avoid the (mis)adventures if possible. It sounded like a movie would be a cool idea. “Where would we go?” (Yeah, it was more about where to go than it was what to see.) When we got back to the house, Jesse was chilling. Once he mentioned never really going to Pasadena, we decided that when Marcus came back, we were hitting the Arclight.
8pm: When Marcus got there, we decided what to watch. Black Swan? (Maybe another time.) How Do You Know? (Romance comedy can be saved for another time.) Tron? Jesse and Marcus made sure Willie thought we would see this up until the time we got there to instead see:9pm-midnight end: The Fighter was a good movie, didn’t even know it was a biopic. And to wrap up, all of us went out to Yardhouse right near the theater. I don’t even remember what I had (Spicy Thai pizza?), but it was good, and it was the first time all four of us roommates went out.
