Looking ahead to Week 10

Open Date – Denver, Houston, Jacksonville, New England, Philadelphia, Washington:

The Broncos are 3-6, just like they were in 2018 and 2017 – I guess changing head coaches is about all this team did. Denver has already allowed 30 sacks this season after allowing 34 all of last season. Also like last season, the Houston Texans are off to a 6-3 start. QB Deshaun Watson has already matched a career-high with 5 rush TD, while RB Carlos Hyde is averaging career-highs in rushing yards per game (78.2) and attempt (4.7). Both Hyde figures are more than injured RB Lamar Miller averaged in a full season with Houston. The Jaguars have only one rushing touchdown all season, a one-yarder from RB Leonard Fournette in Week 5. The Patriots lost. The only other time New England has been 8-1 was in 2004 – a season that saw them repeat as Super Bowl champions. The last time the Eagles were 5-4, Doug Pederson’s team promptly lost five in a row in 2016. Philadelphia is 5-0 when they don’t have multiple turnovers this season. Washington QBs Colt McCoy and rookie Dwayne Haskins have taken more sacks this season (14) than Case Keenum (12) despite Keenum attempting 117 more passes.

Chargers at Oakland: The Chargers fired offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt and then had their best rushing game of the season in a win against the Packers. Do it again in Oakland, and I’ll believe the issues are fixed. The Raiders have allowed only two sacks in the last five games, and that will be the top matchup against Los Angeles DE Joey Bosa.

Chiefs at Tennessee: The Chiefs are another team that got a season-best rushing performance in Week 9, and perhaps they get back QB Patrick Mahomes in Week 10. The Titans were lit up by Carolina RB Christian McCaffrey in Week 9, but they should have an easier time against a Chiefs offense that doesn’t feature a similar singular threat.

Panthers at Green Bay: We won’t see Carolina QB Cam Newton back this season due to a foot injury, so what you see from this offense led by QB Kyle Allen is what you get. That means Christian McCaffrey is going to continue to get all that he can handle, and he gets a Green Bay defense that is terrible. The last time the Panthers saw the Packers was in December 2017 in Carolina, and McCaffrey ripped the Packers for 136 total yards and a receiving TD in what was also Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers’ only 3-INT game of the decade.

Vikings at Dallas: The Vikings have a top-ten defense this season, but they gave up a 91-yard TD run to Damien Williams in Week 9. Now they have to deal with Dallas RB Ezekiel Elliott, who is looking to tie his career-long streak of 100-yard rushing games at four. The matchup between Dallas WR Amari Cooper and the Minnesota secondary will likely determine this one, as it would behoove the Cowboys to give Elliott 25+ touches.

Seahawks at San Francisco: This time last year, San Francisco hosted Monday Night Football against the New York Giants. Both teams were sorry, but it was a game that featured a New York fourth quarter comeback. Now, the 49ers are at a major logistical advantage and are the last undefeated team left facing a Seahawks team that boasts an MVP candidate in QB Russell Wilson. The 49ers broke a ten-game losing streak to the Seahawks in December, in part due to poor special teams by Seattle. This could be a shootout, with Wilson having the best arsenal but San Francisco being in the best position to succeed due to Seattle’s mediocre defense.
