NFL 2018 endseason brief

Just one game left now that the Pro Bowl is a wrap: Super Bowl LIII. At last, I will take a look back at all 32 NFL teams from this past season now that we have the winners of the AFC and NFC.

NE – The Patriots were T-4th in run TD, with rookie RB Sony Michel and RB James White combining for 11. Their biggest weakness is their pass rush, as New England only had 30.0 sacks this season.
MIA – The Dolphins finished 30th in pass yards per game, and besides from RB Kenyan Drake (477 receiving yards, five receiving TD), none of the team’s receivers were overly impressive.
BUF – No team had a worse passer rating than the Buffalo Bills (62.6). Rookie QB Josh Allen finished with 10 TD passes and 12 INTs
NYJ – The Jets finished 30th in run yards per attempt, an averaged pulled down by backup RB Elijah McGuire’s 3.0 average on 92 attempts. New York hired former Dolphins head coach Adam Gase to replace Todd Bowles.

BAL – The Ravens won the AFC North behind a top-3 run defense, as opponents averaged only 3.7 yards per rush against Baltimore. The pass offense needs to better if the Ravens are to win in the postseason next year.
PIT – The Steelers were 21st in passer rating allowed this season, and only CB Joe Haden had more than one INT.
CLE – The Browns were 24th in run yards per attempt allowed, and now former QB coach Freddie Kitchens will be the head coach. Former Arizona head coach Steve Wilks will be the new defensive coordinator.
CIN – The Bengals finished the season ranked 26th in passer rating allowed. None of their cornerbacks had an INT.

HOU – The Texans finished 3rd in run TD allowed, while Pro Bowl front seven defenders J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney combined for 34 TFLs. Houston’s run offense abandoned them in a home Wild Card loss.
IND – No team allowed fewer sacks than the Colts last season. While the run defense was great in the Wild Card, it faltered in the Divisional.
TEN – The Titans were T-28th in pass TD in 2018. QB Marcus Mariota finished seven starts without a TD pass.
JAX – The Jaguars finished T-30th in pass TD. QB Blake Bortles only had three games with multiple TD passes.

KC – Quarterback Patrick Mahomes II led the league in passer rating, buoyed by 50 TD passes and 5,097 pass yards. Kansas City’s run defense cost them the AFC Championship.
LAC – The Chargers finished 5th in passer rating, with QB Philip Rivers throwing 32 TD passes. While the Chargers did well defensively in the Wild Card, they were ran over in the Divisional.
DEN – The Broncos finished 27th in passer rating. Denver needs to add receiving help, whether QB Case Keenum is back as the starter or not.
OAK – No team had fewer sacks than the Raiders. Six players had more than Oakland’s 13 sacks.

Winning Pro Bowl units:

AFC pass offense (TE Eric Ebron)

DAL – The Cowboys were T-8th in pass TD allowed. Dallas shut down the run in the Wild Card, but not on the road in the Divisional.
PHI – The Eagles were T-8th in sacks, led by DT Fletcher Cox with 10.5. Philadelphia survived the Wild Card due to special teams, but the pass offense could not keep the miracle going past the Divisional.
WAS – Washington finished 29th in passer rating. Passers not named Alex Smith finished with six TD passes and ten INTs, which is a problem since Smith has a career-threatening leg injury.
NYG – The Giants finished T-30th in sacks.

CHI – No team allowed fewer run TD than the Bears, with DE Akiem Hicks leading the team with 12 TFL. Unfortunately, a missed field goal cost them in the Wild Card.
MIN – Minnesota finished 25th in run yards per attempt.
GB – Green Bay finished 28th in passer rating allowed. The Packers had only seven INTs, and three of them were by since-traded safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix.
DET – The Lions finished 28th in run yards per attempt, mostly brought down by RB LeGarrette Blount’s 2.7 yards per run average.

NO – The Saints led the league in run TD, with RB Alvin Kamara scoring 14 on the ground. New Orleans did a solid job defending the pass in the Divisional, but the Saints can improve the run defense after the NFC Championship home loss.
ATL – Atlanta finished 28th in run yards per attempt allowed. None of the linebackers had more than four TFLs this season.
CAR – The Panthers were T-27th in pass TD allowed.
TB – Tampa Bay was dead last in passer rating allowed. CBs Brent Grimes and Carlton Davis each started 12+ games without a single INT.

LA – Only the Saints ran for more TDs than the Rams this past season. The Rams run game has been a strength throughout the postseason, and though the run defense was bad during the regular season, it has held up so far going into the Super Bowl.
SEA – The Seahawks were 3rd in passer rating this past season, with QB Russell Wilson putting together a career-best 35 TD and 7 INT. Unfortunately, the Seahawks spent the Wild Card failing to succeed in the run game.
SF – The 49ers finished 31st in passer rating, and the team needs a better WR corps even if QB Jimmy Garoppolo and RB Jerick McKinnon return from ACL surgeries.
ARI – The Cardinals finished dead last in run yards per attempt. Their new head coach is former Southern California offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury.
