Alright, well, the Packers won the Super Bowl over the Steelers 31-25. So now that the game is over, I’m going to post the remaining comments from the game that I started before the game. Now, for my top reactions of this game:
23) I should have stuck with my August predictions as far as Super Bowl XLV was concerned. I had the Steelers losing in the Super Bowl in August.
24) Big Ben has shaved already. Brett Kiesel has also started shaving, but he won’t be done until March.
25) QB Aaron Rodgers (24/39, 304 yards, 3 TDs, no turnovers) has as many Super Bowl wins as Brett Favre, and more Super Bowl MVP awards than Brett Favre.
26) I always say that “defense wins championships (turnovers), offense wins games (touchdowns)”. The Packers didn’t turn the ball over at all. The Steelers? Roethlisberger had an INT that was returned for a TD by FS Nick Collins, putting the Steelers in an early 14-0 hole. Then Roethlisberger was picked again, this time by DB Jarrett Bush; the Packers capitalized with Greg Jennings’ first TD catch to take their biggest lead (21-3). But the biggest turnover came early in the fourth quarter when Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall got popped by Packers OLB Clay Matthews, causing a fumble that was recovered by ILB Desmond Bishop. The Steelers were down only four at that point and in range for points, but the Packers scored their final TD (Jennings’ second TD) after the turnover. Steelers K Shaun Suisham also missed a brutal attempt from 52-yards. The Packers won the turnover battle 3-0 (four if you count the missed field goal), and the touchdown battle 4-3.
27) I mentioned in my “official” Super Bowl preview that Rodgers didn’t have a TE like the New England Patriots had against the Steelers. Packers TEs combined for seven yards in this game. He DID have WR Jordy Nelson though. Nelson must have had about four drops in this game, all of them big. But he also led the Packers with 140 yards on nine receptions and the first TD of the game.
28 ) Charles Woodson will get to see the President. James Harrison will not. Everybody wins!
29) Speaking of Obama, that was a fascinating interview that he had with Bill O’Reilly. I might actually have to watch Fox News this week.
30) The New Orleans Saints are still the best Black and Gold team in the NFL right now (they won the Super Bowl last year and they beat the Steelers this year). And New Orleans native Lil Wayne (Green and Yellow) can share a victory over Pittsburgh native “Cheese” Wiz Khalifa (Black and Yellow).
31) San Francisco 49ers should have drafted Aaron Rodgers number 1 overall in 2005. But then again… Rodgers wouldn’t have had the luxury of sitting for three years before being ready to play in stability. Aaron Rodgers, count your lucky stars that the 49ers thought Alex Smith was better!
32) The 2005 Pittsburgh Steelers became the first sixth seed to win a Super Bowl. The 2010 Green Bay Packers became the first NFC sixth seed to win a Super Bowl.
33) Christina Aguilera was brutal! This reiterates my national anthem theory: Singers hold those notes for extended periods of time in hopes of remembering the entire song!
34) Do I like the Black Eyed Peas? Not as much as I did earlier in life. Do I think they are more pop than hip-hop? Yes I do. Do I think that they were given a raw deal as worst halftime show ever? You damn right I do. I still feel that hip-hop artists do not get respected for their respective talent and artistic ability and stage presence on a national stage. A lot of people wrote off the Black Eyed Peas before the show started, just because they hadn’t released an album before 1980 (like each of the last six Super Bowl performers at halftime)!!!
35) Does this make Aaron Rodgers the new Steve Young? If he is, he is off to a faster start than Young, as it took Young until his tenth season to win a Super Bowl. Rodgers just finished his sixth (third as a starter).
36) Eminem was in a couple of Super Bowl commercials tonight. Eminem released Recovery in June 2010, and ever since I heard “Almost Famous” I’ve been referring to Big Ben as “Slim Roethlisberger”.
37) People need to stop questioning Packers general manager Ted Thompson. He didn’t invite Brett Favre back and he believes in growing his team through the draft, not free agency. I respect the Steelers for doing the same actually. Basically, the anti-Jets and anti-Redskins (especially the anti-Redskins since they don’t win anything). A lot of these Packers have never played for any other team. Notable exceptions are Charles Woodson (who broke his collarbone laying out for his team) and Ryan Pickett, who lost Super Bowls with their previous teams.
38 ) The Steelers (RE: Roethlisberger) really ignored TE Heath Miller. Only 12 yards on two receptions, and he looked to be open in the flat on Roethlisberger’s last pass that went to WR Mike Wallace.
39) Troy Polamalu may have been the Defensive Player of the Year, but it was Clay Matthews who made one of the biggest plays of the game with his forced fumble of Mendenhall.
40) The Steelers threw almost twice as much as they ran. Not their plan. The Packers threw almost four times as much as they ran. Definitely their plan. The Steelers also had the edge in time possession. Another point to say how much turnovers can impact a game.
41) Yes, the Steelers have the most Super Bowl wins with six. But NFL history did not start in 1966. The list of most total NFL championships: 1) Packers (13), 2) Chicago Bears (9), 3) New York Giants (7), 4) Pittsburgh Steelers (6).
42) As a punt returner, Packers CB Tramon Williams could have really blew it for the Packers. He muffed his first return, and then got a dumb penalty after failing to field another punt.
43) Steelers OLB LaMarr Woodley commented via Twitter that the Steelers would never bicker about a team picture. The Packers never commented on Big Ben being out late one night though. Packers score the intangible point.
44) Overall, I would say Carmax and Doritos had the best commercials tonight.
45) And finally… I wonder if we’ll see football on time again. And I wonder if the NFL does something stupid and extend the regular season by two games. What would you rather see, two weak preseason games that will allow some players to make a football team? Or two weak regular season games per team because players are injured? Until the NFL figures things out, I’ll turn my attention to the NBA.
