A Guy Who Listens (Or, How Creep Strategies Improve Work Performance)

So, as a few of you know, I’m pulling espresso shots to pay the bills these days as I finally take an extended period of time to build a legit future.  While I’m not doing terrible at work, I’m not doing great either.  Steady and inconsistent, that’s me in uniform.  I keep it clean and I’m never mean.  Which means that I’m not known for my efficiency or being talkative, but I never have any conflicts and my effort is appreciated.

That being said, it was at least mildly surprising to learn that our store’s ratings were down, prompting all of us to figure out what we needed to do to step up.  Because I’m still relatively new, a concern my partners had with me was that I wasn’t building relationships with regular customers.  Washing dishes until after sundown will do that, but admittedly, I try and focus more on getting my tasks right than I do with being engaging.  Nevertheless, I said I’d try and lighten up a little at the bar.

Relax! No need to let Chiquita speak.

Recently, I was home watching BET late one night (chill, I Think I Love My Wife was on and I live on Pacific Time) and I saw one of those text-to-chat commercials.  The first time I saw it, I didn’t pay it any mind.  But then it came on again:

[important][/important] Eureka!  Straight up, I’m just going to “listen” a little better.  I’m sure my customers will appreciate that.  I’m not even going to care if you didn’t want your previous order again … if I remember your last order then that’s what you’ll get again … and you’ll like it!  Yes, this is the solution to everything.  Maybe if I lock on to them out the door it could lead to a late night conversation as well.  I’m about to become the best coffee dude ever!
