Self-Titled Album Track #4: Title Track

(For more on Self-Titled Album, check the first post.)

In case people did not realize that I wrote a “comedy”/parody of all albums with Self-Titled Album, allow “Title Track” to make it perfectly clear.  The “title track” of an album generally refers to the song on the album that shares the name of the title of the album (e.g., “Thriller” on Michael Jackson’s album Thriller).  Now, Self-Titled Album already has a track that follows this rule (see above link), but “Title Track” takes it one step further than what any sane A&R would deem necessary.

4. Title Track

I went back to the multiple backing tracks theory to write “Title Track”. This was the only track that I wrote that took longer than two days to write. It was also by far the most confusing, most complicated, and most tedious to make a music video for. This is also one of two tracks to feature my bass on the album; it is looped through the hook and intro. This song tells four different stories. Verse 1 samples Cammy’s theme from Super Street Fighter II and features the titles of random 60s and 70s songs while telling the story of a dude not having any luck in the club. Verse 2 samples Funky Kong’s theme from Donkey Kong Country 2 and features the titles of random 80s songs. It’s about me traveling. Verse 3 samples Fei Long’s theme from Super Street Fighter II and features the titles of random 90s songs. It is supposed to be an inspirational verse. Verse 4 samples “Rainbow Road” from Super Mario Kart and features the titles of random 2000s songs. It is supposed to be my own verse of perseverance. That’s a lot to take in and nobody is expected to know this on first listen, so the question “What is this?” is asked throughout the track to simplify things (and perhaps add to the confusion).

In other words, any time you hear a song subtly refer to another song in the lyrics, know that it will never be taken to excess quite like it is here!  Need a little help with the song titles?  Check out these lyrics!

LYRICS: What is this?!
“Soul Man”/Looking for a “Black Magic Woman”/“Tired of Being Alone” all the time “She’s Gone”/“Home Is Where the Hatred Is” and he can’t get no “Satisfaction”/He used to be a “Street Player” until things got “Too Hot”/Standing next to a “Fire” sometimes you have to leave what you’ve got/“Got to Give It Up”, “Gotta Serve Somebody”/“Life Is a Carnival” when you’re “Living For the City”/He’s “Going in Circles” but he’s not “Feelin’ Alright”/Caught “Stage Fright” on “Ladies Night”, not “Wonderful Tonight”/“Roxanne” shut him down, “Maggie May” ran away/“Gloria” looked the other way, “What Can I Say?”/He was “Shattered” a sight not hard to “Imagine”/He thought he saw “Sara Smile” and he said “Hold On, I’m Coming”/But it was “Nothing From Nothing”, she was just laughing at him, wasn’t trying to be “Jamming”, so “Boys Keep Swinging”

Now to the 80s, representing 87/Insomniac traveler, “No Sleep Till Brooklyn”/“6 In the Mornin'” and I “Welcome to the Jungle”/“Jane Says” “‘I Ain’t No Joke'”, I tell her “‘You Got’s To Chill'”/Just another “Blackeyed Blonde” trying to be in “Control”/“Don’t Believe the Hype” when they say “I Know You Got Soul”/Switched routes, now I’m on a “Ship of Fools”/Going “Somewhere Down the Crazy River” and I’m going to break the rules/When looking for “Trouble In Paradise” I don’t ask “Is It a Crime?”/“What I Am” is a “Smooth Criminal”, subliminal all the time/That’s the “Cult of Personality” but “Don’t Get Me Wrong”/I’m “Running Down a Dream” and if you chip me we can “Get It On, Bang a Gong”/You “Wanna Be Startin’ Something” but I’m “Going Away” to “Another World”, I’m at the dock/I’ll take a “Subway to Venus” through “Planet Rock”/Check if I’m “Wanted Dead or Alive” when I’m “Back on the Block”

If you “Free your Mind” then “The World Is Yours”/“Everyday Sunshine” even through the “Winter Warz”/“Keep Ya Head Up” so you may “Breathe Again”/Then your “Respiration” will be “Smooth” like “Porcelain”/To the “Lost Ones” who missed the “Revolution”/Catch the “Resurrection”, shocking like “Electric Relaxation”/So what’s the “Definition”, what’s “The Verb to Be”/It’s “Whatever You Want”, make it “Triumph” or “Victory”/Now inspiration takes time, so “Check the Rhime”/“Pass the Mic” and get ready to “Climb”/You might be gone for “One Week” or “Gone Till November”/Even if it’s “Five Long Years” it’s “Sweet Surrender”/There will be ultimate “Liberation” and “No Rain”/You’re not senseless or “Insane in the Brain”/“I Gave You Power”, “Proceed” to “Bring the Pain”

So “In the End”, I see “The Light” and I’m “One Step Closer”/I strongly suggest that you “Run, I’m a Natural Disaster”/I’ve alerted “The Whole World” of a 1SKILLZ “Takeover”/If you’ve been on that “Hash Pipe” you’ll “Burn” with “Ether”/And I’m not “The Scientist”, just another “Fighter”/Still I use a “Slow Chemical” to make it “Hot in Herre”/I’ll make it “Harder to Breathe” but you’ll still hear “The Rooster”/For it’s in the morning that I made it to “Church” that’s how I beat “Lucifer”/“Jesus Walks”, “Never Let Me Down” so I’m his “Soldier”/If I go down I get up “Like Toy Soldiers” “Over and Over”/I’ve countered a “Cupid’s Chokehold” with a “Twisted Transistor”/I “Don’t Bother” a “Girl” if she shows to be a “Gold Digger”/It’s OK to be a “Money Maker” just beware of “Miss Murder”/It’s OK to be a “Superstar” just don’t be “The Pretender”/And it’s OK if I’m “The Underdog”, I’ll just get “Stronger”
